Nintendo Wii controller problems?

I have a friend who has a Nintendo Wii controller and its not working properly. As it considers the control steady, the little hand moves on its own, as if the control is moved. She has to shake it, to read it to the system. What could be the problem? I should point out that my friend and I are adults. So, those who do reply with intelligent comments, take it elsewhere.
